ear infection

i just saw an ad on tv for bon jovi's new cd. the single, "have a nice day," may be the worst song i have ever heard. it joins the ranks of music i find really offensive that includes:
- "rich girl" by gwen stefani (actually, i find gwen stefani's whole being, at least her artistic being, horrible. she's the worst.)
- "invisible" by clay aiken (see previous).
- any inane r&b song that refers to a woman's ass as "that thing." not because it objectifies women, although it does, but because it sounds stupid.
- "that's what i like about you." who sings that song anyway?
i plan to add to this list as time goes on. i also hope for input from anyone else who cares to weigh in.

Su-Su-Sudeo (or however you spell it) by Phil Collins(or one of his bands--American Psycho rips on this) What is that?
or Solid as a Rock has this awful chorus, something like "ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha" Used to be on the soundtrack at my old job. Awful.
or just any 80s music video where the lead guitarist and the keytar or bassist play back to back (physically) and are 'really into it'. C'mon, just weird.

For a feminist reframing of "that thing", try Lauryn Hill's eponymous song. It's, so, I don't know, I have such a crush on her anyway.

"That's what I like about YOU... Ya hold me tyeeeeeeeet! Neva wanna let you go, girl ya make me feel alryeeeeeeet! Yeah!"
It's The Romantics! I think we may be covering them in my seminar this semester.
Also, would you object to "that thang"?
You're right - Jon Bon never eclipsed _Slippery When Wet_, which had "You Give Love a Bad Name" and an inner sleeve that showcased the band getting sudsy with scantily-clad carwashers. Those fabulous Reagan years...

Were you even ALIVE during the Reagan years?

Well, not really. Actually, I was born at the beginning of Bush the First. But I hear those 80s sure were fun.
